Would You Like to Foster for Dogs First?

We are on the lookout for volunteers to foster animals for us. Fostering saves lives — by opening your home temporarily, you give a dog the love and stability they need while we find them their forever family.

Fostering Guidelines

Some guidelines to help you decide if fostering is for you:

1

The Dogs First team will do a first assessment of the dog and fosterers will continue assessing the dog and providing updates.

2

A fosterer is expected to regularly exercise, socialise and train the dog.

3

Fosterers are expected to take the dog for vet treatment if required.

4

Fosterers are encouraged to attend Dogs First events, walks, etc.

5

We can't guarantee perfect dogs — dogs going into foster need time to adjust and get used to new surroundings.

6

There is no timeline on how long a foster arrangement will last. Regular communication with the Dogs First team is essential.

7

The Dogs First team is always available for help and advice.

8

If a foster placement isn't working, the Dogs First team needs to know as soon as possible.

9

Food, equipment and supplies are provided by Dogs First.

10

Fostering with a view to adopt will require a £50 non-refundable bond which will come off the adoption donation if adoption goes ahead.

11

If vet bills are generated during fostering, the Dogs First team need to be aware and have the final say on whether treatment should go ahead or not.

12

Failed fosters are always appreciated! 🐾

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does fostering last? expand_more

It varies! Some dogs find their forever homes within a few weeks, while others may need a few months. We'll always keep you informed and work around your availability.

Can I adopt the dog I foster? expand_more

Yes! Many of our foster carers become "foster fails" — meaning they fall in love and adopt their foster dog. We just ask that you complete the normal adoption process.

What if it doesn't work out? expand_more

We understand that sometimes things don't work out. We'll always take the dog back and find an alternative placement. Your wellbeing matters too!

Do I need dog experience? expand_more

Not necessarily! We match dogs to fosters based on experience level. Some dogs are perfect for first-time carers, while others need more experienced hands. We provide full training and support.
